Overall attendance, persistent absentees, severely absent pupils, registers not taken and unexplained absences are computed alongside the register rather than assembled from it a fortnight later. An authorised absence with a medical appointment reads differently from an unexplained one, to a parent, to a pastoral lead and to an inspector, so the reason is part of the record rather than a footnote.

01Session and lesson registers
- AM and PM statutory sessions, with lesson registers where the timetable requires them.
- Autosave on every change, with the author and time recorded for each mark.
- A cover teacher sees the register they need without being given the class permanently.
- Late after registration is a distinct mark, not a subjective note.
02Parents report absence themselves
- Absence reported from the parent app before the register opens, with a reason and an expected return.
- The report reaches the register, the office and the form tutor at once, so nobody telephones a family that already told the school.
- Evidence such as a medical note can be attached at the point of reporting.
- Unreported absence generates the first contact automatically, in the family's preferred channel and language.
03Follow-up and escalation
Absence follow-up is a chain, not a task list. Each step has an owner, a deadline and a record that it happened.
- First-day contact, then a defined escalation ladder with named owners at each rung.
- Every contact attempt logged against the child, including the ones that failed.
- Pattern detection across sessions, days of the week and subjects.
- Safeguarding escalation where the pattern warrants it, into the restricted record rather than the behaviour log.
04Persistent and severe absence
- Thresholds configured per school and computed continuously rather than at reporting time.
- A pupil approaching a threshold appears before crossing it, which is the only point at which it is useful.
- Intervention recorded against the pupil with its own review date.
- Impact measured after the intervention, so the next meeting has evidence.
05Roll call, fire drills and trips
A normal register was never designed to answer the question of who is physically here right now. Roll call is a separate mode because it is a separate question.
- Live headcount by assembly point, including staff, visitors and contractors.
- QR scanning at the gate, the bus and the event feeding the same count.
- Missing list produced in seconds, with last known scan and location.
- The drill is logged as evidence, with time to completion.
06Statutory and regulatory reporting
- Attendance codes and categories mapped to the reporting framework the school is inspected against.
